A few years ago, before we brought our second Siberian Bisky home, I posted an article on how to minimise stress while introducing a second cat. I have since come across a good updated article on doing just this! Please see below: INTRODUCTION TO CATS: HOW TO BRING HOME A NEW CAT WHEN YOU HAVE OTHER PETS *sponsored post*
For my American and Canadian friends, here is a good article on deciding whether pet insurance is right for you. I know for me, after extensive research, I decided that pet insurance is worth it if you purchase at the time of obtaining your pet and before it has a medical history! It's always good to do your own research and look into all the pros and cons! Best Pet Insurance Based on In-Depth Reviews A comprehensive guide to pet insurance providers, how they work, what they cover, and how to choose the right one for your pet. www.consumersadvocate.org/pet-insurance Hello my lovelies!
So I have an (almost) 4 year old and an (almost) 2 year old. From the time they were babies we have had to actively teach them to be gentle with our cats. Leska and Bisky have never been anything but friendly with the babies, as with most Siberians, they are gentle, sociable, friendly animals and perfect for families. Even though they don't get as much attention as before, they seem happy enough, as they have each other. The older one, Leska, gets annoyed sometimes (for example if his tail gets a yank from the 2 year old). The younger one, Bisky, is more playful and kitten like and will even play with our kids. All in all, I definitely recommend Siberians for young families! Wow I feel awful for not getting on here in so long! I've been so busy and so much has happened! Firstly we picked up our new kitten a few days ago, he is 13 weeks old and his name is Shemiaka Sibirskiy - we have shortened this to Bisky! Sibirskiy means Siberian in Russian :-) Here he is the day we brought him home!! We did separate Leska and Bisky as soon as we brought him home but Leska was super curious so we let him investigate. I was anxious to begin with and thought we had done the wrong thing as Leska hissed and growled at Bisky. The breeder told me to expect this but it still made me sad. However as time went on it appeared very evident they were going to be friends. Leska still growled occasionally for the first few days but now 4 days later he has stopped that. They do absolutely everything together, they are inseparable. If Leska hears Bisky cry he runs to him to see if he is ok. If Bisky can't see Leska he meows for him until he can see him. Leska cleans Bisky til he is all wet and Bisky tries to suckle from Leska! Lol hopefully he will give up when he realises there is no milk to be had!! Also we went on our trip to Japan which was awesome, and visited two cat cafes (the one we had previously been to, Calico Cat Cafe, and also a new one in Shibuya). So I will do a review of the other cat cafe we went to soon!! Japan is just amazing for animal lovers, we went to a squirrel garden, a monkey zoo and a monkey park (snow monkeys), and didn't have time to go to a bunny garden and fox garden!! Japanese people are also obsessed with cats and I bought sooooo much cat stuff, cat books and cat magazines. You can easily decorate your whole house with cat stuff without even trying!!
I also found out I am pregnant in Japan which is super exciting :-) James is currently on kitty litter duty which he is not too pleased about but better to be safe than sorry hey! Bisky LOVES to curl up on my lap and purr really loudly and I cannot wait til baby is big enough to hear/ feel the cats snuggled around my belly.... I think it is going to be just lovely and hopefully baby and kitties will love each other :-) Anyway, more on that later xxx So I have some new pictures of our new little kitten - he is now 4 weeks old. We don't get him until he is 12 weeks old so we will have to do with email updates for now!
So we went to visit our new kitten yesterday! He is only 2 weeks old and has only just opened his eyes. We will get to bring him home when he is 12 weeks old, so around Easter time. Luckily the breeder lives 5 minutes from us so we can visit easily! Now we just have to think of a name.
I found a very useful article about using herbs to reduce stress in cats - 5 herbs to reduce stress in your cat We recently took Leska to the vet for his annual check-up and vaccinations and he was quite upset about the whole thing. I wasn't anticipating this as when I took him to the vet as a kitten (he's only just over a year old now) he didn't seem to mind and was quite happy and friendly. I guess kittens can be over confident and now maybe he has learned more about the world and has learned to be cautious! Anyway, I didn't realise there was anything other than catnip and Feliway you can use to calm your cat down. Catnip doesn't seem to work on Leska (apparently only some cats get enjoyment from it?) and I haven't tried Feliway yet, however I did try a calming collar and calming tablets when he was a kitten and peed in places he wasn't meant to! So, herbs that apparently are useful to reduce stress in cats are as follows:-
We are getting a new kitten! In a few months after we get back from Japan. We are going to get another Siberian so we have gone to see the breeder who has two pregnant cats due any day now! Very exciting. It took me a while to come around to the idea because I only want to do what's best for Leska but I have decided that it would be best for him to have a friend, especially for when we are not home as he is a very social cat. The breeder assures me Siberians are very welcoming of new cats, in fact any new pet or tiny human :-) I have been doing some research on introducing a new furry family member and have discovered some good pointers!
Here is a website I found very helpful - Introducing a Second Cat I will definitely make a post about how the introductions go!
